Message from the Executive Committee of Bangladesh Medical Society
We are passing a very difficult and uncertain time. The corona pandemic has disrupted every aspect of our life including the health and wellbeing during last one year. Now the scientists are talking about the threat of third wave of Covid in the UK and possible booster dose of covid vaccine in autumn this year.
We have lost many of our colleagues, relatives and friends during this pandemic both in the UK, Bangladesh and worldwide. I sincerely mourn the loss of their valuable lives.
You may be aware that Bangladesh Medical Society has currently put on hold of all its scheduled programmes due to the pandemic. Last time we observed Shahid Dibosh (International Mother Language Day) in a gathering in Manchester was on Saturday the 22nd February 2020.
The executive committee (EC) of Bangladesh Medical Society continues to meet virtually via the Zoom. In one of the Zoom meetings we invited our general members to join the EC to exchange member’s health and wellbeing messages. EC continues to observe the pandemic situation and review all of our activities.
This year on Sunday the 21st February 2021 Bangladesh Medical Society has observed Shahid Dibosh (IMLD) via virtual Zoom meeting. The feedback from the participants was quite encouraging and very good.
The EC has planned the following programmes for the rest of the year (2021). Please make a note of the dates in your diary. Please also note that these dates may change or may not take place at all particularly the annual reunion, AGM and BMS election if any unavoidable circumstances arise due to the pandemic.
- Bengali New Year celebration 2021
Sunday the 16th May 2021, 2 PM. This meeting will be held virtually via Zoom.
- Golden Jubilee celebration of the independence of Bangladesh
Sunday the 6th June 2021, 2 PM. This meeting will be held virtually via Zoom.
- Gathering of BMS members and their families over a lunch in London
Saturday the 24th July 2021. Venue and rest of the details will be notified later.
- Annual reunion and Annual General Meeting 2021
Saturday the 25th September and Sunday the 26th September 2021.
This two days event will be held in Hilton Hotel, Watford, London. Please note that discounted hotel rooms will be available for overnight stay on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the members of BMS and their guests.
Bangladesh Medical Society’s election will be held this year (2021) and the result of the election will be declared by the election commissioner during the annual reunion.
The details of the above programmes will be notified by the General Secretary of BMS nearer the time of events.
Finally last three / four months quite a few new doctors have joined the BMS. The Executive Committee would like to congratulate them for their interests and great enthusiasm in joining BMS.

Shahid Dibosh 2017
The society commemorated the Shahid Dibosh (Martyr’s Day) on Saturday the 25th February 2017 in Beesley Green Community Centre, Swinton, Manchester. The function was presided over by the General secretary of BMS Dr Md Abdur Razzaque. His Excellency High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Dr Md Nazmul Quaunine was the Guest of Honour of the function. Both the General Secretary and the High Commissioner laid flowers to the Martyr’s monument. High Commissioner Mr Quaunine gave a speech in honour of the language movement heroes (martyrs) in the meeting, which was followed by a cultural function.
The function was well attended by the BMS members and their families including the wives of Bangladesh High Commissioner and the deputy High Commissioner (Birmingham) Mr Jul Karnine.
Bengali New Year & Annual Dinner 2017
The society’s Pahila Baishak and Annual Dinner were held in Novotel Manchester West Hotel in Worsley, Manchester on Saturday the 22nd April 2017.
The Bengali New Year programme was performed by a Bengali cultural group ‘AALORON’ from west Yorkshire. The first part of the function was popular songs and music covering all the six seasons of Bangladesh. The second part of the function was a Bengali drama called ‘Bipholey Mullo Ferot’ staged by the AALORON artists and written by a Hungarian writer.
The Annual Dinner was well attended by the members of BMS and their families & friends. The dinner party was presided over by the acting President of BMS, Dr Masudur Rahman. The dinner was followed by a cultural function including songs, jokes and poems performed by the members of BMS.
Annual Reunion & AGM 2017
The society’s 21st Annual re-union and AGM were held on Saturday the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd September 2017 in Copthorne Hotel, Slough-Windsor, Berkshire.
The inauguration ceremony of the annual re-union was well attended by the members of BMS and was presided over by the acting President of BMS, Dr Masudur Rahman.
The Medical Seminar was chaired by the Treasurer of BMS, Dr Hasib Reza Choudhury.

The Bengali drama ”Atithi (guests) was staged by the members of BMS and was written by the past President of BMS, Dr Masud Ahamed. The drama was directed by Dr Mustafizur Rahman. The drama was attended by a big number of audiences including the His Excellence High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Dr Md Nazmul Quaunine and his wife. After the drama, Mr Quaunine was invited to the stage to deliver a speech. He expressed his sincere thanks to the actors & actresses and prompters. He also praised the activities of Bangladesh Medical Society in the UK including the entire medical profession working in the UK.
The evening dinner was attended by 113 guests including the High Commissioner of Bangladesh and his wife. The dinner party was hosted by the acting President of BMS, Dr Masudur Rahman.
After the dinner, a cultural function/ family entertainment was performed by the members of BMS.
AGM was held on the morning of Sunday the 3rd September 2017
The AGM was presided over by the acting President of BMS, Dr Masudur Rahman. The President, General Secretary and Treasurer submitted their annual reports. The reports were discussed, added and subtracted by the general members before they were accepted by the members of BMS.
The Election Commissioner, Dr Ahmed Zaman declared the names of the newly elected 15 members of the executive committee of the Bangladesh Medical Society.
In the afternoon, a cultural function was held. The function was performed by the professional guest artists, performing Varat Nattam dance by a female dancer and Tagore songs sang by Mr Ashim Datta.
Shahid Dibosh 2016
The society commemorated the Shahid Dibosh (Martyr’s Day) on Saturday the 27th February 2016 in Beesley Green Community Centre, Swinton, Manchester. The function was presided over by the President of BMS, Dr Masud Ahamed. The executive committee of BMS led by the president laid flowers to the Martyr’s monument. Speakers from the members paid tributes to the language movement heroes (martyrs) with great honour, dignity and pride. It was also mentioned in the meeting that the United Nations has recognised the 21st February as the International Mother Language Day. The meeting was followed by a cultural function, performed by the members of BMS and their families.

The Bengali New Year programme was performed by a Bengali cultural group ‘AALORON’ from west Yorkshire. The first part of the cultural function was dance, music and ‘Naba Barsha Boron’ Bengali songs. The second part of the function was a Bengali drama called ‘Chikitsha Sankat’ staged by the AALORON artists and written by a Bengali writer from Kolkata.
The Annual Dinner was well attended by the members of BMS and their families & friends. The dinner party was presided over by the President of BMS, Dr Masud Ahamed. The dinner was followed by a cultural function including songs, jokes and poems performed by the members of BMS.
Annual Reunion & AGM 2016
The society’s 20th Annual re-union and AGM were held on Saturday the 3rd and Sunday the 4th September 2016 in Copthorne Hotel, Slough-Windsor, Berkshire.
The inauguration ceremony of the annual re-union was well attended by the members of BMS and was presided over by the Convenor of the re-union and Vice-President of BMS, Dr Masudur Rahman.
Dr Masudur Rahman spoke in a sombre mood and broke the sad news that ”Dr Masud Ahamed, President of Bangladesh Medical Society in the UK, passed away in the early hours of this morning”. He added that Dr Ahamed was the founder member of the society and worked as a GP in Birmingham. He also mentioned that Dr Ahamed had contributed to the Bengali literature by writing several novels, poems and Bengali play. He had also received a Bangla Academy Award.
The meeting prayed for the departed soul of Dr Masud Ahamed and expressed the deepest sympathy to his wife, Dr Hosne Ara Ahamed and two sons, Sagar and Saikat.
The Medical Seminar was chaired by the Joint Secretary of BMS, Dr Md Salimuzzaman Bhuiyan.

AGM was held on the morning of Sunday the 4th September 2016
The AGM was presided over by the acting President of BMS, Dr Masudur Rahman. The reports from the President, General Secretary and Treasurer were cut short and the responsibility was given by the members present to the Executive Committee to look into the issues.

The meeting was followed by a cultural function, which was conducted by the cultural secretary of BMS, Dr Anwar Hossain and performed by the members of BMS and their families.

Obituary
We express our sincere condolence for the death of the following members of BMS
- Dr Masud Ahamed
He died on Saturday the 3rd September 2016 in Queens Hospital, London after suffering from bowel cancer for a long time. He left behind his wife Dr Hosne Ara Ahamed, sons Sagor & Saikot and many admirers. He was the past President of BMS.
Bangladesh Medical Society held a condolence meeting in Kobi Nazrul Centre, London on Saturday the 15th October 2016. The meeting was chaired by the General Secretary of BMS, Dr Md Abdur Razzaque. The meeting was jointly organised with the Udichi Shilpi Gosthi, Satyan Sen School of Performing Arts and Progoti Lekhok Sangha. The meeting was attended by a large number of professionals and distinguished persons including Mr Abdul Gaffar Choudhury from all over the United Kingdom. Dr Ahamed’s wife, Hosne Ara Ahamed, two sons, Sagar and Saikat were also present in the meeting.
